Periodontal disease treatment
什麼是牙周病?
Periodontal disease refers to conditions affecting the gums and surrounding supporting tissues, primarily encompassing gingivitis and periodontitis. These conditions are typically caused by the accumulation of dental plaque (tartar), leading to gum inflammation and tissue damage. Treatments ranging from tartar removal and deep cleaning to water laser-assisted periodontal therapy can help patients restore gum health while minimizing pain and healing time.

What causes periodontal disease?
The primary cause of periodontal disease is dental plaque, a sticky, colorless substance that clings to the tooth surface. Poor oral hygiene allows food debris to accumulate, encouraging bacterial growth. These bacteria adhere to the teeth via substances such as sticky proteins in saliva, forming a film. If plaque is not promptly removed, it calcifies over time and accumulates minerals from water, forming tartar. Although research shows that tartar itself is not the root cause of periodontal disease, its rough surface makes it easier for plaque to adhere, and therefore it can be considered a contributing factor.
Periodontal disease symptoms
Bleeding from the gums when brushing or chewing hard foods
Unexplained pain in the mouth
The gaps between teeth gradually widen, and the teeth begin to move and shake.
Unexplained gum swelling or dull pain
Gum recession, causing teeth to appear longer
Bad breath

Mild periodontal disease
The gums become inflamed and spaces develop between the gums and teeth, forming "periodontal pockets." The gums may become swollen and painful, and may begin to have a bad smell.

Moderate periodontal disease
The periodontal pockets deepen, the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone are destroyed, the gums begin to recede, the roots of the teeth may be exposed, and the teeth become sensitive.

Severe periodontal disease
The alveolar bone is severely damaged, the teeth lose their support, the gaps between teeth become larger, and the teeth begin to loosen, shift, and even fall out.
